Does Pregnancy Change Your Teeth?

premier • November 23, 2022

Pregnancy is something that changes many aspects of a woman’s body, including her oral health! Everyone is different, so you may experience something another mom-to-be doesn’t, and vice versa. Here’s how pregnancy can affect your teeth!

Hormones

A woman’s hormones are something that changes continually throughout her pregnancy. Hormones can have a large impact on the rest of her body during this time. These changes can increase the mouth’s acidity, which could lead to cavities if not properly prevented. Ligaments and bones in the mouth may also temporarily loosen during pregnancy, increasing cavities. Moms don’t need to worry about tooth loss because the shift typically only happens due to being pregnant. It would be best if you told your dentist that you’re pregnant as soon as possible. This way, they can look at any issues you may be having and decide if it’s a result of pregnancy or other issues.

Gums

As a result of hormonal changes, your gums could change as well. For example, some women develop a condition known as pregnancy gingivitis. This is an inflammation of the gums that can cause swelling and tenderness. If left untreated, it could lead to a more severe form of gum disease. On another note, if you notice your gums bleed more than usual, do not be alarmed. When your gums get tender, and you floss on top, it can make them bleed from time to time. If you notice the bleeding is not going away, check with your dentist.

Cravings

Cravings differ from woman to woman during pregnancy. Some women have them, and others do not. If you experience cravings, like sweets, be mindful of your dental hygiene. An increase in sweet and salty food can affect your oral health. Make sure to follow a consistent routine of brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing as well. This will keep any plaque and tartar at bay while your appetite changes. In addition, you should still plan on seeing your dentist at least once a year for a cleaning, even while you’re pregnant!
