FAQ’s About Tooth Sealant

premier • December 12, 2022

Studies by the American Dental Association show that sealants on permanent molars help reduce dental cavities. Tooth sealants are highly recommended for children because they can usually not brush the corners and crevices of their teeth. However, adults can also use sealants to prevent tooth decay. These are the most frequently asked questions about tooth sealant.

What is a sealant?

A sealant is a liquid plastic placed on the chewing surface of molars and premolars. The sealant flows into the deep fissures of the teeth to protect them from acid attacks. It does this by sealing out food particles and bacteria. Dental sealants are clear or white and not visible on the teeth.

How are they applied?

The procedure for applying dental sealants is non-invasive and painless. The dentist will clean the tooth surface to get rid of food debris and plaque. Next, the dentist will isolate the tooth to prevent saliva from covering the tissue and pit surfaces. The practitioner will then etch the surface of the tooth, rinse, and finally dry it. The tooth will have a chalky appearance. At this point, the dentist will apply the sealant material. Finally, a curing light hardens the sealant.

Why are sealants important?

Sealants are important for protecting teeth from bacteria that promote tooth decay. In most cases, sealants are applied when the chewing surface of the tooth has erupted. This normally occurs between six and 12 years of age. Sealants are used for older children and adults if their teeth grooves or show signs of decay.

If left untreated, tooth decay can lead to gum disease and eventually tooth loss. One of the first lines of defense against tooth decay in children is the use of tooth sealants.
