Mouthguards: What They Are

premier • March 22, 2022

What are Mouthguards?

Mouthguards are devices used to protect your teeth, gums, tongue, and cheeks while you sleep or to prevent you from getting injured when playing sports.

Who May Need a Mouthguard?

Both children and adults require a mouthguard. Your doctor may advise one if you or your child:

  • Play a contact sport like hockey that puts you at risk of face injuries.
  • Participate in noncontact sports such as ice skating or gymnastics
  • Suffer from bruxism

Types of Mouthguards

They come in two broad categories:

  • Designed to offer protection from sports-related trauma
  • For people who suffer from teeth grinding

The following are the main types of mouthguards:

Boil-and-bite

Boil-and-bite mouthguards are affordable and can be purchased from any drug store. They come in one size that you can shape to fit your teeth. Soften the mouthguard by boiling it, then place the softened mouthguard over your teeth and bite it down.

Stock Mouthguards

Stock mouthguards are the most common type. Unlike boil-and-bite, they come in small, medium, and large fits. Given their limitations in size, most people find them uncomfortable as they don’t offer a tight fit.

Custom-fitted mouthguards

If the above options do not work for you, you can have your dentist use an impression of your teeth to custom-make a mouthguard that perfectly fits you. Note that you will have to pay more for custom-made mouthguards.

How to Take Care of Your Mouthguard

Mouthguards do not last forever. However, you can use these tips to make them last longer:

  • Clean your teeth prior to inserting your mouthguard
  • Clean the mouthguard after every use
  • Carry your mouthguard to your doctor’s appointments
  • Always check for holes and dents in the mouthguard

The Lowdown

Whether you are an active sports person or you have a sleep disorder, you need a mouthguard for protection and to ensure you get a good night’s rest.
