Oral Health’s Correlation With Heart Health

premier • July 20, 2020

The state of your oral health can display signs indicating the state of your overall health. Specifically, studies have shown a connection between oral health and heart health. Here’s the correlation between oral health and heart health, and what you can do about it!

Poor Oral Health

Numerous studies have found a connection between periodontal (gum) disease and coronary heart disease. One finding from this body of research is people with poor health are more likely to have cardiovascular issues. For example, those suffering from tooth loss or periodontal disease are more likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke. Although poor dental health increases your risk of poor heart health, scientists have not proven oral problems are causing heart issues.

Periodontitis and Oral Health

When gum disease causes, someone’s gum disease is known as periodontitis. According to a recent study of adults diagnosed with hypertension, those with periodontitis had high blood pressure levels. Patients with good oral health had lower blood pressure levels. Even patients receiving treatment for hypertension had blood pressure readings if they also had periodontitis. Researchers concluded periodontitis could be limiting the effectiveness of hypertension medication.

Endocarditis and Oral Health

When gum disease causes someone’s gums to bleed, bacteria from the mouth enter the bloodstream. That’s not a problem for most people. However, individuals with certain heart conditions are at a higher risk of developing endocarditis, an infection of the inner lining of the heart stemming from bacteria elsewhere in the body.

What You Can Do

The first thing you can do is practice good oral hygiene. This means flossing once every day, brushing twice daily, and using fluoride toothpaste. A study found that brushing twice daily for at least two minutes could reduce your risk of cardiovascular diseases. Another thing you can do is schedule regular dental visits. During your dental check-up, your dentist will check to make sure everything your teeth are happy and healthy. A frequent dental examination can reveal signs of health problems in other parts of your body as well. One of the best things you can do for your teeth is to eat a nutritious diet. Diets high in sugar or lacking necessary nutrients raise your risk of oral health problems. Make sure to monitor your sugar intake to ensure your teeth stay healthy.
