Preventive dentistry is the cornerstone of lifelong oral health. At South Holston Dental Designs, we believe in “dental health care” rather than “disease care.” Our comprehensive preventive services help you avoid costly, complex treatments down the road by keeping your teeth and gums healthy from the start.
Located just off I-81 in Bristol, VA, we serve patients throughout the Tri-Cities region who want to maintain healthy smiles for life.
Comprehensive Dental Exams
Your oral health affects your overall health. During your comprehensive exam, we evaluate not just your teeth, but your entire oral system including gums, jaw joints, bite alignment, and oral cancer screening. We use digital imaging to detect problems early when they’re easiest and least expensive to treat.
What We Check:
Even with excellent home care, plaque and tartar build up in areas your toothbrush can’t reach. Our professional cleanings remove these deposits before they cause decay or gum disease. We also polish your teeth to remove surface stains and create a smooth surface that resists plaque buildup.
Cleaning includes:

Our digital x-ray technology reduces radiation exposure by up to 90% compared to traditional film x-rays while providing detailed images that help us detect problems invisible to the naked eye. We can identify cavities between teeth, bone loss from gum disease, impacted teeth, and other issues before they become serious.
Oral Cancer Screenings
Early detection saves lives. During every routine exam, we perform a thorough oral cancer screening, checking for abnormal tissue, lesions, or other warning signs. Oral cancer is highly treatable when caught early, which is why we make screening a standard part of preventive care.
Fluoride Treatments
Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel and helps prevent decay. While most adults get adequate fluoride from toothpaste and drinking water, some patients benefit from professional fluoride treatments—especially those at higher risk for cavities or with sensitive teeth.
Dental Sealants
Sealants provide an extra layer of protection for the deep grooves and pits in back teeth where decay often starts. This simple, painless treatment can prevent cavities for years and is especially beneficial for children and teenagers, though adults can benefit too.
Periodontal (Gum Disease) Evaluation
Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, yet it’s often painless in early stages. We carefully evaluate your gum health at every visit, measuring pocket depths and checking for inflammation. When we catch gum disease early, treatment is simpler and more effective.
Save Money Long-Term
Preventing problems is always less expensive than fixing them. A routine cleaning costs a fraction of what you’d pay for a crown or root canal. Regular preventive care helps you avoid the big-ticket dental work that results from neglect.
Keep Your Natural Teeth
With proper preventive care, there’s no reason you can’t keep your natural teeth for life. Regular exams catch small problems before they require extractions, and professional cleanings prevent the gum disease that leads to tooth loss.
Protect Your Overall Health
Your oral health is connected to your overall health. Gum disease has been linked to heart disease, diabetes complications, stroke, and other serious conditions. Keeping your mouth healthy helps keep your body healthy.
Catch Problems Early
Small cavities are quick and inexpensive to fix. Large cavities require crowns or root canals. We find problems when they’re still small, saving you time, money, and discomfort.
How Often Should You Visit?
Most patients should see us every six months for a cleaning and exam. However, we customize your preventive care schedule based on your individual needs:
Every 3-4 months: Patients with gum disease, high cavity risk, or certain medical conditions may need more frequent visits to maintain optimal health.
Every 6 months: The standard schedule for most patients with healthy teeth and gums.
Every 9-12 months: Some patients with excellent oral health and low risk factors may be able to extend visits slightly, though we generally recommend staying on a six-month schedule.
First Visit
If you’re new to our practice, your first visit will be comprehensive. We’ll review your medical and dental history, take necessary x-rays, perform a thorough exam, and discuss any concerns you have. We’ll also create a personalized treatment plan if we find any issues that need attention.
Your first visit includes:
Once we’ve established your baseline health, routine visits focus on maintaining that health. Your hygienist will clean your teeth, and one of our doctors will examine your mouth for any changes or new concerns.
Routine visits include:
Education First
We take time to explain what we’re seeing and why it matters. We’ll show you problem areas on your x-rays, demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques, and answer your questions in plain language. Our goal is to help you understand your oral health so you can make informed decisions.
Personalized Recommendations
No two patients are alike. We develop preventive care recommendations based on your unique situation—your oral health history, risk factors, lifestyle, and goals. What works for one patient may not be right for another.
Comfortable, Anxiety-Free Care
We know many people feel anxious about dental visits. Our team works hard to create a relaxing, positive experience. We explain what we’re doing as we go, take breaks when you need them, and use gentle techniques to keep you comfortable.
Latest Technology
Our digital x-rays, intraoral cameras, and other advanced technology help us provide more accurate diagnoses with less discomfort. We invest in tools that improve your experience and help us deliver better results.
Signs You Need a Dental Checkup
While we recommend regular preventive visits, call us right away if you notice:
These symptoms could indicate problems that need prompt attention.
Children & Teens
We make dental visits fun and educational for young patients. We teach proper brushing and flossing, apply sealants to protect developing teeth, and monitor growth and development. Early preventive care sets the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles.
Adults
As we age, our dental needs change. We help adult patients maintain healthy teeth and gums while watching for age-related concerns like gum recession, worn enamel, and dry mouth.
Seniors
Preventive care is especially important as we get older. We help senior patients keep their natural teeth comfortable and functional, and we’re experienced in caring for patients with dental implants, bridges, and other restorations.
Most dental insurance plans cover preventive care at 100%, including two cleanings and exams per year. We accept most insurance plans and will file claims on your behalf.
If you don’t have insurance, we offer affordable rates for preventive services. Taking care of your teeth now costs far less than treating problems later.
Don’t wait until something hurts. Regular preventive care keeps your smile healthy and helps you avoid costly dental emergencies.
