Suffering From Bad Breath? We Can Help!

premier • Aug 05, 2020

Are you suffering from bad breath and not sure what to do? We can help! Here is a simple outline of halitosis and what you can do to stop it!

Halitosis

Halitosis is chronic bad breath that lingers for extended amounts of time and could be a sign of underlying issues. Bad breath is something that people experience in the morning when they just wake up or after they eat something strong, but goes away. Halitosis does not simply go away by brushing your teeth and could be a symptom of another health issue. So what causes halitosis?

Causes

As stated before, halitosis can point to underlying health issues you are unaware of. It can also be caused by lifestyle choices as well. Here are the most common causes of halitosis.

  • Cavities
  • Gum disease
  • Lack of dental care
  • Mouth, nose, and throat infections
  • Dry mouth
  • Smoking
  • Tobacco
  • Gastric reflux
  • Diabetes
  • Liver or kidney disease

What’s Next?

Your dentist is one of the best people to consult about your halitosis! If they feel there are other underlying health issues outside of their realm, they will likely refer you to another doctor. Halitosis is not something to sweep under the rug. There are things you can actively do to try to help with your bad breath, before seeing an outside specialist! Make sure you are brushing your teeth twice daily and flossing once a day. This can help rule out the causes of halitosis. If the cause was simply lack of dental care, by increasing the frequency you care for your teeth, your bad breath could stop. If you make these changes, but still suffer from bad breath, contact your dentist.
