The Proper Dental Hygiene Routine

premier • Jul 12, 2021

Did you know that the mouth harbors trillions of bacteria? These little critters will cause plaque buildup, which can lead to gum disease and tooth decay. A dentist-recommended dental hygiene routine is necessary for maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Here are some tips on how to care for your teeth more effectively:

Brushing the Right Way

Oral health is  crucial in maintaining a healthy and happy life. To maintain proper dental hygiene, you must brush your teeth at least twice a day. Below are the right steps to follow when brushing, as recommended by dentists:

  • Brush in circular motions and up and down the gum line for about 2 minutes each time. You should also clean your tongue to remove bacteria that can cause bad breath and gum disease. Tongue scrapers are a great way to do so!
  • Use  fluoride toothpaste  to reduce the risk of tooth decay. Fluoride works by fighting germs and bacteria that cause tooth decay. It also forms a protective barrier that bacteria or germs cannot penetrate.
  • When brushing, make sure to cover every part of the mouth- including in between each tooth and under the gum line with gentle circular motions. The bristles of your toothbrush should be angled properly so they can reach hard-to-reach places like below back molars and on top where gums meet the teeth. Remember, always brush from left to right!

Flossing is not Just a Good Habit; It’s a Necessity

Finally, do not forget to floss!  Flossing  is essential for removing bits of food that may have been missed during brushing. It also helps remove plaque and tartar- which can lead to gum disease if left untreated.

Why Biannual Dental Hygiene Checkups are Important

For many people, getting a dental cleaning is thought of as mundane or just another thing on the to-do list. But it may be more important than any other medical appointment if you want your mouth in good shape and free from bacteria that can cause oral cancer!

Dental care should include brushing twice per day and a biannual visit to a dentist for both teeth extractions and oral cleanings. This will ensure all signs are caught before they even have time to get worse. Be sure to  ask these four questions  during your visit.
