Ways to Care For Your Children’s Teeth

Your child’s dental habits will lay the foundation for how healthy his teeth will be as an adult. You can assist your child by demonstrating and teaching proper oral care habits from a young age. One of the best ways to do this is to bring him to the dentist every six months. The dentist will look over your child’s teeth and detect any problems. He’ll also give guidance regarding what you can do at home to ensure healthy teeth for the child. Here are additional ways to care for his teeth properly.

Limit The Sugary Foods

It’s no secret that kids love sugary snacks and drinks, but you should set limits on the amount they consume each day. This is because excess sugar consumption often leads to cavities and other dental problems. Give your kids vegetables and cheese dip instead of candy bars. Instead of soft drinks, give them more cups of cold water after they eat dinner. Fresh fruits are also good alternatives to sugary snacks.

Regular Brushing Is A Must

Another thing you should do is brush your child’s teeth twice a day and after age 8, he should be able to brush his teeth. Make sure your child brushes his gums, both the upper and bottom sides of his teeth, and the tongue. Your child should also floss in between his teeth because it gets to areas that the toothbrush doesn’t reach.

Discourage the Pacifier and Thumb-Sucking

As your child goes from infancy to becoming a toddler, he must eliminate habits that are not good for his teeth. Do what you can to reduce your child’s dependence on the pacifier for comfort. Some pediatricians say that excessive use of pacifiers and thumb-sucking could interfere with how the front upper teeth come in.

With these helpful tips, your child’s teeth will be strong and attractive for years to come. If your child needs the best dental care, contact us. We offer services that include dental implants, preventative care, and teeth whitening.
