What Your Dentist Looks For During An Exam

Ever wonder what your dentist looks for during a dental exam? We’re here to tell you!

Dental Exam

During a dental exam, your dentist will look for specific things to ensure your oral health is on the right track. It will start with any necessary x-rays or photos your dentist needs for your file. Once this is completed, your cleaning will begin!

Cleaning

Your dental hygienist will start your cleaning off by examining your mouth. They will look at your gums specifically for any tartar or plaque build-up. After they’ve done this, they will start scraping away any plaque or tartar they see. These two things are one of the main causes of gum disease, which is why it’s so important to get rid of them. It’s not always possible to rid your teeth of this with just a toothbrush, which is why it’s so important to go to the dentist. They have special tools that can clear away tartar that does so in a safe and painless matter. Once this is done, they will move on to brushing. Your hygienist will brush the front and back of your teeth, then finish with flossing.

Dentist Visit

At the end of your cleaning, you will visit with the dentist. Before they come to see you, they will review your new x-rays to see if anything is out of the ordinary. Anything new will be discussed at this time. Your dentist will also take a quick look inside your mouth to ensure everything looks good. He or she will specifically be looking for cavities, gum disease, and any abnormalities found in your face, neck, and mouth. They may also discuss your risk of developing further issues based on the current state of your oral health.
