Impacted Tooth: Treat Urgently

premier • Mar 08, 2022

An impacted tooth occurs when a tooth remains stuck inside the jaw and does not pass the gum line to grow normally. Dentists identify the severity through a dental X-ray. Some teeth are partially impacted while others are fully immersed in the gum.

Often, they don’t cause obvious symptoms but if left untreated, they become a health hazard.

Let’s explore some of the consequences of an impacted tooth and why you need to fix the teeth as soon as you make a discovery.

Consequences of Untreated Impacted Tooth

Abscesses

Impacted teeth often result in pockets of bacterial infection. That’s because they leave space between the tooth and gum, thereby attracting bacteria. Unfortunately, tooth abscesses don’t resolve on their own, hence you need to see a dentist for treatment.

Difficulty When Chewing or Biting

Since the tooth is sunk in the jaw, it leaves a gap when you bite your teeth. As a result, it becomes difficult to fully break down food because the teeth cannot grind together.

Inflammation in the Gum

Inflammation in the gum is mostly the result of gum disease  that is caused by a bacterial infection from an impacted tooth. Similarly, excess pus from the bacterial infection can drain into the gum causing tenderness, redness, or bleeding.

Damage to the Neighboring Teeth

An impacted tooth grows parallel to the jawline, thereby pressing onto other teeth or even displacing them. The affected teeth can crack or move in the jaw and cause excruciating pain.

Tooth decay

Impacted teeth are harder to clean. Subsequently, they trap food and bacteria in the space between the tooth and gum. As a result, that causes tooth decay and loss.

Pain

An impacted tooth can grow backward and inhibit the ability of your jaw to open and close. Eventually, this affects the jaw muscles and nerves and causes pain. In severe cases, the patients get referred pain which spreads to other teeth and parts of the face.
