Keep Your Teeth Healthy As You Age

premier • Oct 06, 2020

The American Dental Association states that a common misconception is that when you age, you are automatically going to lose your teeth. This is not necessarily true. There are things you need to do to care for your teeth as you age to prevent that from happening. Here are two tips to help keep your teeth healthy as you age.

Proper Care

As stated before, just because you age does not automatically mean you’re going to lose your teeth. If you take proper care of your teeth, they will last longer, even a lifetime. The most important thing to do is to establish and follow a strict dental routine. It should consist of brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing once a day, and the use of mouthwash. In addition, it’s recommended you visit the dentist at least once a year. Most dentists recommend every six months, which gives you two professional dental cleanings a year. This excludes any extra visits for procedures, dental work, fillings, and more.

Adopt A Well-Balanced Lifestyle

A great way to ensure your teeth’s longevity is to adopt a well-balanced lifestyle. This means avoiding things harmful to your health like smoking, drinking excessively, and consuming unhealthy foods. This doesn’t mean you can’t eat any sugar ever again; instead, make sure you balance it with food that’s good for you. Some foods that benefit your teeth include :

  • Fiber-rich fruits and vegetables
  • Dairy products
  • Green and black tea
  • Water (most tap water contains fluoride, which is good for your teeth)
